Product Description

All the flavour of a traditional kipper without the large bones. These fillets are split, boned and cold-smoked over hardwood in the same way as our whole kippers, giving the same deep, savoury character in a format that is quicker to cook and easier to eat. Please note that small pin bones may remain.

Grill for a few minutes each side until heated through, or try the jug method for a gentler result: stand the fillets upright in a jug of boiling water for a few minutes for a softer, less pungent finish. Serve with butter melting over the top and good bread alongside. A proper British breakfast, without the fuss of bones.

Our kipper fillets are made from whole herrings sourced from the South West coast. When local herrings are available, we smoke them in house. When they are not, we source freshly smoked kippers from trusted suppliers to ensure consistent quality year round. Prepared to order with nothing sitting in stock and sent out fresh on your chosen delivery day. Always fresh and never previously frozen, so you can freeze at home if needed.

Serve simply with butter and a wedge of lemon, or flaked through scrambled eggs on toast.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Traditional Kipper Fillets?

Traditional Kipper Fillets are herring that have been carefully cured and naturally smoked using traditional methods. This process gives the fish its distinctive rich flavour and golden colour, creating a classic British smoked fish enjoyed for generations.

How should Traditional Kipper Fillets be cooked?

Traditional Kipper Fillets are best gently grilled, pan-fried or poached. Cooking the fillets slowly helps bring out their natural oils and smoky flavour. They are traditionally served with buttered toast and a squeeze of lemon.

Are Traditional Kipper Fillets already smoked?

Yes. Traditional Kipper Fillets are naturally smoked, which gives them their distinctive flavour and golden colour. Smoking preserves the fish and creates the classic taste associated with traditional kippers.

Do Traditional Kipper Fillets contain bones?

Yes. Traditional Kipper Fillets naturally contain fine bones as they are prepared from whole herring. These bones are usually soft after cooking and are commonly eaten as part of the fish.
