Bass vs Seabass – What's the Difference?
Estimated reading time: 3–4 minutes
Ever wondered whether there's a difference between bass and seabass? You’re not alone. It's one of the most common questions we’re asked — and with good reason. While the names are often used interchangeably, the truth is, there are important differences, especially when it comes to how and where the fish is caught.
At Hamilton’s Fish, we use both terms — intentionally — to help customers clearly distinguish between wild-caught British bass and farmed seabass. Here’s everything you need to know.
Is There a Difference Between Bass and Seabass?
Technically, no — they’re the same species. The correct name is European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), a silvery-white fish prized for its mild flavour and firm texture. But in the UK seafood trade, the terms “bass” and “seabass” are often used to refer to different sources and qualities of the fish.
Wild Bass vs Farmed Seabass
Here’s where the real difference lies:
- “Bass” typically refers to wild-caught bass, landed locally — often by line or net — and sold fresh. It’s a seasonal, premium product with superior texture and a cleaner, more delicate flavour.
- “Seabass” usually refers to farmed fish, often raised in the Mediterranean. While still delicious, farmed seabass has a slightly softer texture and a richer, more oily flavour profile.
This isn’t an official industry rule — but it’s a distinction some reputable fishmongers make, and one we follow closely at Hamilton’s Fish.
Why We Use Both Terms
We want to make your seafood shopping experience as clear and transparent as possible. That’s why we label our products as either:
- Wild Bass – always line-caught or netted in British waters, sourced from Brixham Fish Market.
- Farmed Seabass – responsibly farmed and ASC-certified, prepared fresh to order.
Using both names helps customers avoid confusion — especially those seeking wild-caught fish with a premium flavour and origin story. We know some customers prefer wild for its firmer texture and sustainable sourcing, while others enjoy the consistency and value of farmed options.
So… Should You Choose Bass or Seabass?
That depends on what you’re looking for:
- For a special occasion or fine dining at home, choose wild bass. Its firm flakes and clean flavour shine with simple cooking.
- For everyday meals, our farmed seabass fillets offer excellent value and are perfect for grilling, pan-frying, or baking.
